Cycling
As mentioned briefly in the previous post, I’ve started cycling in the last few weeks. It’s been very very good. It’s kind of hard to put all the benefits and reasons I like it into words. Perhaps a story will enlighten.
Last night I found out about a cycle shop in our town. This morning I decided to ride over there and get to know the owner. I got ready to leave at about 9. It was raining. But I wanted to go anyway. Would I have walked somewhere? Absolutely not. But cycling is different. I was going regardless of the rain. I set out and was a bit unsteady because of the wet pavement. So, on the advice of a friend, I concentrated on my cadence and finished the 5 miles pretty quickly. I rolled up to the store and it didn’t open until 10. So i rode around the neighborhood nearby for a while. Flat tire. I walked the bike back up to the store and waited for about 20 minutes or so. 10:10, still not open. I checked the hours again. Closed on Wed. Call missy from the laundromat. She picks me up.
Regardless of the flat and the closed store and that I have to wait until tomorrow to fix my tire so I can ride to work, it was worth it. I got 5 miles in after all. Average speed today only 14.3 mph.
I added “Enter a bicycle race of at least 50 miles” onto my to do list.
Hit Bottom
Looking for the cure to feeling like you have to run the rat race? Here’s my recipe:
Death of a Salesman
Pedro the Lion’s “Penetration”
Backpacking
Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer
The Corporation
Cycling
The Sermon on the Mount
Frisbee
Fight Club
Take in equal parts of each and make sure to mix well. Watch any of the films, then throw some frisbee. Take a backpacking trip and read Into the Wild along the way. Gather some people at your house and read the sermon on the mount together. Talk about it. When you’re done talking, ask them if they have a bike. If not, take them to the nearest cycle shop. On the way, listen to as much of the Control CD as possible, but make sure to hear “Penetration”. Should serve enough people to make a community.
*Cooks note* I have only recently begun cycling but am already pretty excited about it. And I’ve only read the introduction and reviews for Into the Wild, but it’s been recommended to me. As soon as the two books I’m currently working on are done, I’ll read that one.

Sunday Morning
I heard this testimoy this morning:
“He guides me…with hands more gentle and soft than the clouds whispering by. Praise. Praise. Praise the Christ.”

Desmond Tutu says:
Happy Birthday Jeremy!
If you were buying tickets to a show for your brother, which one would you pick?
Richard Buckner, $10
Decemberists, $16.50
John Scofield plays the music of Ray Charles, $22
N. Mississippi All Stars, $20
Sufjan Stevens, $15.00
I’m leaning towards Sufjan, but it’ll be up to him I think

Hurricane Emily
I’ve been posting some on the hurricane season. Emily passed over Grenada, doing some more damage to the island, which still hasn’t fully recovered from Ivan.
As far as the Nazarene church in fontenoy goes, they are still trying to finish the retaining wall so that the road above doesn’t keep collapsing in on it. It’s still gonna take about $8k to finish just that portion.
Pray for me as well. I’ve contacted all the Nazarene churches in this area to help work on this together, but I havent heard from a single one. It’s a little disheartening and I’m trying not to be negative about it. I should probably get used to it.
Here’s an article Kelli Shearon sent me:

Woo Hoo!
I don’t want to get anyone too excited, and I don’t want to cut anyone out of my incredible serendipity….but it looks like I might have about 23 million dollars by the end of the month.
I received an email today from a certain Kenny Paul who works for a diplomatic corp in…well he didn’t really say where, but obviously that’s not important. The service this corp provides is “a hallmark in reliability and confidentiality.”
It seems there is a some benefactor in some country who is being closely monitored by someone. This makes it impossible for her to retrieve money from Europe which resulted from some Diamond sales. All I have to do is provide the following information so the funds can be sent to me and then on to her…somehow:
Full Name, Address, phone #, fax #, mobile #, closest airport, age, and country.
He awaits my response urgently.
So long suckers, I’m rich now. To quote David Bazan:
“Have you ever seen an idealist with grey hairs on his head? Or successful men that keep in touch with unsuccessful friends? You only think you did. I could have sworn I saw it too. But as it turns out, It was just a clever ad for cigarettes”

If you’ve been watching, there have already been some storms turning into Hurricanes in the Atlantic. I think most of the people who read my blog have a vested interest in watching them. Molly lives in Honduras, which was already run over by a tropical storm this year. Many of you have friends and family in Florida or on the Gulf. And of course, the friends we have in Grenada.
This was on the BBC this morning.
If anyone is interested in following the hurricanes, use this site.
Also, here is the history of Ivan last year, the one that hit Grenada. You’ll notice for that hurricane, Grenada had the highest rating (category 5), the highest amount of deaths (39) and the worst damage.
Pray for Jamaica, Dennis hit it last night.
