Dream job

Posted in Humor, religion at 1:18 am by actualkingdom

If anyone sees this job description out there, please let me know:

Pastor for Church Reduction

Imagine a large, well resourced church with a weekly congregation of over 1000 members.  Imagine our 40,000 square foot facility designed to attract every age and demographic (at least all the caucasian ones); a facility which includes a coffee shop, food court, and of course a 12 screen multiplex.  Imagine working with 49 other staff members in a complex, if somewhat emotionally distant manner.

Now imagine working against all that.

Giant Church of the Nazarene is looking for a Pastor for Church Reduction to join its already bloated staff.  We average approximately 1000 people on Sunday mornings and have 200 students enrolled in our Day Care/Pre-School/K-12 Christian school/Home Schooling Recovery Center.

Our goal is to reduce our staff, reduce our congregation, reduce our global footprint and reduce our hubris.  Are you the right person for the job?

The right candidate should display the following:

  • Radical committment to the teachings of Jesus Christ.  (Admittedly, you may have to teach us what this means)
  • Desire to see the congregation decentralize from a large self serving gathering of disinterested and disengaged persons to  small groups of very committed followers willing to forgo all the fancy bells and whistles, which we’ve taught them is what constitutes “church.”
  • Ability to define “church.”
  • Proven ability to prophetically denounce that which is counter to the Kingdom of God (we may again need a primer here) in the interest of weeding out those not truly committed to the reign of God.
  • As in the Wizard of Oz, the desire and ability to pull back the curtain and show the people it’s really all just a show.
  • Desire to meet with other staff members and discuss their imminent termination and the ability to encourage those staff members to live in community to save money.
  • Desire to teach us how to suffer with those who are suffering.
  • Able to articulate the difficult parts of the gospel we have ignored and encourage us to act upon them.

For the right candidate, the salary will start at $50,000 with a pay decrease of 20% each year, depending on goals met (or not met…we’re not sure how this works).

Interested candidates should send their resume and statement of belief to:

Rev. Ron Racketeer; Giant Church of the Nazarene

21 Giant Jesus Statue Rd.

Colorado Springs, CO 80901

i may have made a mistake…or at least a huge omission.

i my previous post about my favorite albums of the last few years, there should be one added to the list.  I knew it was risky to do the 2007 list before i’d heard all the possibly good albums.

A couple days ago I bought Josh Ritter’s new album The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter.  Musically, it’s amazing.  And lyrically…well, all the accolades about him being the most authentic american songwriter out there are true.  It’s brilliant.  A couple examples:

My orchestra is gigantic
This thing could sink the Titanic
And the string section’s screaming
Like horses in a barn burning up
He plays pianos with fistfuls
Of broken Belvedere crystal
And he’s trying to forget you
But the music’s never loud enough

From “Rumors”

Sorry, but I have to put this next song on in its entirety.  It doesn’t make sense without the beginning and it’s simply stunning.

If this was the Cold War we could keep each other warm
I said on the first occasion that I met Marie
We were crawling through the hatch that was the missile silo door
And I don’t think that she really thought that much of me
I never had to learn to love her like I learned to love the Bomb
She just came along and started to ignore me
But as we waited for the Big One
I started singing her my songs
And I think she started feeling something for me

We passed the time with crosswords that she thought to bring inside
What five letters spell “apocalypse” she asked me
I won her over saying “W.W.I.I.I.”
She smiled and we both knew that she’d misjudged me

Oh Marie it was so easy to fall in love with you
It felt almost like a home of sorts or something
And you would keep the warhead missile silo good as new
And I’d watch you with my thumb above the button

Then one night you found me in my army issue cot
And you told me of your flash of inspiration
You said fusion was the broken heart that’s lonely’s only thought
And all night long you drove me wild with your equations

Oh Marie do you remember all the time we used to take
We’d make our love and then ransack the rations
I think about you leaving now and the avalanche cascades
And my eyes get washed away in chain reactions

Oh Marie if you would stay then we could stick pins in the map
Of all the places where you thought that love would be found
But I would only need one pin to show where my heart’s at
In a top secret location three hundred feet under the ground

We could hold each other close and stay up every night
Looking up into the dark like it’s the night sky
And pretend this giant missile is an old oak tree instead
And carve our name in hearts into the warhead

Oh Marie there’s something tells me things just won’t work out above
That our love would live a half-life on the surface
So at night while you are sleeping
I hold you closer just because
As our time grows short I get a little nervous

I think about the Big One, W.W.I.I.I.
Would we ever really care the world had ended
You could hold me here forever like you’re holding me tonight
I look at that great big red button and I’m tempted

Political games

Read this story just now:

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2007/11/13/student-given-question-for-clinton-i-just-want-honesty/

I wonder how this is any different than candidates only allowing supporters into their press conferences?  We saw that over and over in the last election with our current president.  The intent seems to be the same: make sure the candidate doesn’t get asked anything embarrassing or about which they don’t have much knowledge.

What’s so awful about hearing someone say, “You know, I’m not real sure…but I’ll find out.”  Or heaven forbid, actually asking a question from someone who isn’t preapproved to lick your boots.

Some music

So, I’ve been wanting to post this for a bit, and seeing a similar list on Phil’s blog encouraged me to do so.

My top albums over the last few years.  Since I have a hard time ever picking favorites, I’ve chosen three for each year.  In the case where there is a clear favorite for me, I’ve put an asterisk next to it.  Also, it should be noted that these are my favorites.   I’m not claiming these are the best albums, so please don’t give me comments like “Dude, Paris Hilton’s album is so much better than…”

Hybels and church growth

Posted in America, religion at 2:32 pm by actualkingdom

So, Bill Hybels, the pastor of Willow Creek Megalopolis has recently had some misgivings about the ways they’ve been doing things.  They had some consultants come in and interview church members and found that the level of spirituality in their church was incredibly low.  Big shocker.

Hybels reaction to the findings:

Thesis

Posted in Books, Xavier, life at 4:24 pm by actualkingdom

Over the last couple months, I’ve been working here and there on my thesis.  I had some changes with advisers and other issues to deal with.  But now I’ve begun the real haul toward the writing.

I’ve been on OhioLink and Xavier’s library page this morning, requesting book after book.  I’ve also been creating the outline, which takes longer than you might think.  My new adviser, who is the director of the Brueggemann Center, and I met last week to talk about the scope of the paper and how to go about creating it.  We decided 75 to 100 pages is a good length and have set some benchmarks about when to send them in.  I placed myself writing about a chapter of it (out of 4, roughly 25 pages each) each month until the end of February.

This post is really just an apology to many of you I won’t be seeing or talking to very often between now and then.

New Posts

Posted in Travel, Xavier at 11:40 pm by actualkingdom

So, I’ve put up a few new posts on the Peacebuilding site.  There is soon going to be a webpage for the Brueggemann Fellows and I was adding some journal entries that I hadn’t electronically posted so that they’d be accessible when the site is up and running.

In case anyone is going to be in Cincinnati tomorrow, me and some of the other fellows will be speaking about our experiences from about 4 to 6 (I think…better call me).

Here are the new entries:
